WAHINGTON, D.C.—In spite of the rain yesterday, dozens of intactivists marched from the Capitol to the White House late afternoon in support of children’s rights to genital integrity. Groups of demonstrators came in from as far as the northwest and Canada, and included many families with young children. Demonstrators held banners and chanted slogans such as, “His Body, His Choice!” and “Intact Genitals are a Human Right!” Saturday’s march was the highlight of the 21st annual Genital Integrity Awareness Week (GIAW).
GIAW includes daily demonstrations on the west lawn of the Capitol, where intactivists engage with visitors including thousands students on their class trips, in plain view of Congress. Sharing and learning circles and dinners are also part of the events of the week.
GIAW was founded by David Wilson of the Stop Infant Circumcision Society. It is held during the last week of March, since March 30th is the day that the federal Female Genital Mutilation law went into effect in 1997. The FGM Law protects females from any form of genital cutting, including a symbolic “ritual nick,” with no exemption for religion. It is also unconstitutional as it applies to female minors but not to male and intersex minors.
